The investigation of defects in shock-metamorphosed quartz

The shock-metamorphosed quartz exhibits thermal luminescence (TL) with maxima at 365 nm, 470 nm and 610–680 nm. By electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis E₁ type electron centers and hole centers have been found which originate from vacancies including those from the substitution of Al³⁺ and/or Fe³⁺, for Si⁴⁺. The EPR and TL spectra may be interpreted mainly in terms of vacancy type defects associated with dislocations in the crystal structure of quartz.
