Effective index of calcite and quartz

The thickness of calcite or quartz required for an element of a given half width (FWHM) depends not only on the wavelength and index difference of the birefringent material, but also the first derivative of the index difference with wavelength. For calcite, the effective index difference can differ by as much as 50% from published values.
