Laboratory studies on the effect of metals on oxygen uptake by sewage sludge in brackish water

Heavy metals are often regarded as toxic to all forms of life and therefore generally undesirable. However, their presence in industrial wastes dumped into the Bristol Channel stimulates the growth of certain bacteria in the water and may therefore hasten the self purification process and not be wholly undesirable in moderation.
