Stability of minerals in surface weathering reactions: A general thermochemical approach

A list of formational free energy data is provided for a range of common rock forming minerals. Free energy changes accompanying their decomposition to realistic stable products are calculated and shown to be in agreement with persistence observations. Weathering mechanisms and environmental controls are discussed.
