| Abstract: | The purpose of this article is to investigate the cladistic method for systematic taxonomy of seagrasses. Seagrasses occur world-wide with over 50 nominal species described. Ten characters have been selected for a cladistic analysis of twelve genera. Arcozostera is treated as the outgroup. We present an analysis which suggests a revised classification of seagrasses involving subdivision of the group into five families. They are Zosteraceae, Thalassiaceae, Amphibolisaceae, Posidoniaceae and Enhalusaceae. |
