The occurrence and movement of water

A review is presented of the basic scientific analysis of the behaviour of water at all scales from the molecular (10⁻⁸ m) to the catchment scale (10⁵ m). The approach needed to make progress at the various scales is shown to be different and sometimes contradictory.
