STUDY OF STRONG EARTHQUAKES FROM HISTORICAL RECORDS

Although we have the longest historical records of earthquake occurrences in the world, the inherent limitations of these accounts demand some special considerations in dealing with them. In this paper, the method of treating the strong earthquakes in Chinese history is described. The catalogue of 64 strong earth quakes and isoseismals for five of them are given. From these, it is possible to estimate some of the parameters of the earthquakes by the well-known macroseismie methods. A method of drawing a kind of "synthetic" isoseismals, as was suggested by Professor G. P. Gorshkov, is also described. From these, an "average" rate of decrease of seismic intensity with epicentral distance is obtained for Chinese historical earthquakes, those with abnormally shallow or deep foei not being included in the consideration.
