The Ayres raised beach,Isle of Man
Authors:C Ward
Abstract:The area fringing the north coast of the Isle of Man, known as the Ayres, consists of beach deposits lying three or four metres above high-tide level (about 6 m above O.D. at Douglas). This raised beach extends from Phurt on the east coast to Sartfield on the west where it is cut out by modern coastal erosion. The fossil fauna is recent in character; Lamplugh (1903) used this as a basis for correlation with other raised beaches and platforms around the island.
