Abstract:When applied to a sea surface, shortcomings are noted for the ordinary classification of drag conditions at rigid underlying surfaces according to the Reynolds roughness number Res. It is shown that in the case of mobile underlying surfaces, it would be more natural to use the dynamical classification of drag conditions according to the order of magnitude of the ratio (delta = tauohgr/tauugr) of the momentum flux toward the waves (Tgrw) to the viscous momentum flux through the surface (Tgrw). The relevant estimates of delta for the main stages of development of the wind waves indicate that the observed values of the drag coefficient of the sea surface correspond to the case of underdeveloped roughness.
