通过对伊通盆地基底中钻遇的两套白垩纪火山岩的分析，以及追踪盆地周边的泉头组地层在盆地内的延伸分布，证实在泉头期伊通盆地处于剥蚀环境，而且与大黑山一起在晚白垩世泉头期即已开始隆升.盆地周围出露的泉头组地层没有延伸到盆地之内，只是在一些彼此孤立的小盆地发育中，诸如双阳盆地，它和松辽盆地具有各自独立的演化历史.古水流研究也支持此观点.
