The tribute to Ivan Mikhaylovich Gubkin as written by M. I. Varentsov not only notes his contribution to Russian economic geology and to petroleum geology in particular but also his contribution to the Communist Party and the socialist government which it directs. The paper includes a discussion of his political philosophy. It stresses his insistence upon rigorous mental attack of geologic problems. It points out his realization that the solution of many practical geologic problems lies in a better understanding of the stratigraphic and tectonic framework (or geologic history) of major geologic regions such as geosynclines and platforms.
