Abstract:In this paper,we used GRACE and GLDAS data to calculate the time series of terrestrial equivalent water in the United States from Jan.2003 to Dec.2013.The two calculation results were strongly correlated with a correlation coefficient of 0.91.The lowest land water was calculated by GRACE data reserves in Jul.2012,which is consistent with the results of the Palmer Drought Index(scPDSI)issued by the European Drought Research Center.It proves that the GRACE time-varying earth gravity field model has the ability to detect drought.The data released by NOAA(National Oceanic&Atmospheric Administration)was used to calculate the rainfall and evaporation during the drought and compared with the average rainfall and evaporation in the past 30 years.Finally,the reason for the drought in the US in the summer of 2012 is that the rainfall in some regions of the central region is less than the average of 40—50 mm.The temperature in the central and western regions is higher than the average,which resulting in evaporation in some states above the average of 10—20 mm.
