Abstract: | The results of research into the characteristics of spikes in a radar signal scattered by the sea surface at small grazing angles and horizontal polarization of radiation are reported. Studies were carried out at wind speeds of 4.4–10.3 m s–1. It is shown that the experimental distribution of the amplitudes of the radar signal spikes is described well by an exponential function. The distribution of the amplitudes of spikes, normalized to their average value for the measurement cycle, is of universal character. It does not depend on the observational conditions. The relationship between the average level of signal and the wind speed agrees with the results of computation on the model suggested.Translated by Mikhail M. Trufanov. |
