Abstract: | The existence and structures of various polyanion species, A k n? ,occurring in inorganic compounds and minerals are rationalized using qualitative molecular orbital (MO) theory. Polyanions which may be stabilized by high pressure or lattice defects are discussed and compounds likely to show such species are identified. Previously observed high pressure properties of Fe riebeckite and MgO are interpreted in terms of O - O bond formation at high pressure. |
