Abstract:In order to find the reason of fluctuations in the autumn cohort abundance of Japanese flying squid(Todarodes pacificus),the potential spawning ground model was constructed for a period from 1979 to 2018 using sea surface temperature(SST)and bottom topography suitable for spawning.On this basis,we developed a series of spawning ground indices including,mean value of suitability sea surface temperature(MVSS),suitability SST weighted area(SSWA),and the meridional position of SST isoline(MP).In this study,we also analyzed the influence of the environmental condition change of spawning ground on the autumn cohort abundance of Japanese flying squid.The result showed that catch per unit effort(CPUE)is a better abundance index than catch and similar regime shift patterns were detected between squid abundance and spawning ground indices.MP24 has the most significant influence on autumn cohort abundance with a 1-year lag(MP24_Lag1).Our findings provided an essential basis and reference for predicting the recruitment of the autumn cohort of Japanese flying squid in the future.
