Abstract: | Summary The aim of this paper is to compare the optical behaviour of three uniaxial opaque minerals containing nickel as the sole necessary cation, namely, nickeline (NiAs), breithauptite (NiSb), and millerite (-NiS). Their reflectances have been measured in air and in oil between 400 and 700 nm. Since all three sets of curves indicate that calculations of refraction indices and absorption indices may be made with small errors only, these calculations have been made. It is found that within a great part of the visible spectrum the maximum absorption indices occur for vibrations perpendicular to the shortest Ni–Ni distance.
