Abstract: | Tufa, or travertine, is a deposit of calcium carbonate precipitated with the loss of carbon dioxide from springs or streams saturated with calcium bicarbonate. Algae or bacteria may assist in this process, which is favoured by raised temperatures. British and overseas examples of tufa deposits show various features including their role in damming up lakes. |
