Institution:Jeffrey K. Rosenfeld is a staff scientist with Lockheed Engineering &Sciences Co. (1050 E. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89119), which is the primary technical support contractor for the U.S. EPA Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory in Las Vegas. He is involved primarily in the assessment of ground water and soil contamination at hazardous waste sites. Rosenfeld has a B.S. in geology from M.I.T. and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geochemistry from Yale University.;Russell H. Plumb Jr. is a senior staff scientist with Lockheed Engineering &Sciences Co. (1050 E. Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89119). For the past five years, he has been evaluating the techniques and strategy developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the purpose of monitoring the impact of hazardous waste disposal sites on ground water. Prior to joining Lockheed and while employed by various academic, industrial, and governmental agencies, he accumulated more than 15 years of experience studying the environmental behavior of chemicals. Plumb has a B.S. degree in chemistry from Baldwin-Wallace College and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in water chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Abstract:Ground water contamination profiles from five wood treatment facilities across the country have been compared. The distributions of organic priority pollutants at the five sites are similar, with the most common contaminants being polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and phenolic compounds. These contaminants are the predominant constituents of creosote, which is a common wood preservative. Inorganic contaminants have also been detected at these sites, but their distributions are not uniform across all sites. The distributions of the organic priority pollutants at the five sites appear to differ from those at other hazardous waste sites. Suggested recommendations for choosing monitoring parameters for wood treatment facilities are presented.
