Abstract:The East China Sea (ECS) is known for frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs), which have affected the ecosystem and local aquaculture industry. In this review, we examined and compared the composition of phytoplankton sampled in 67 reported expeditions from 1957 to 2019 in the ECS. In total, 773 species (65 varietas) were identified, including 470 Ochrophyta species (42 varietas) and 253 Dinoflagellata species (23 varietas). Of the 773 phytoplankton species described in these expeditions, 135 red tide species were identified, including 73 Ochrophyta species, 56 Dinoflagellata species, 3 Haptophyta species, and 3 Cyanophyta species. No obvious trend of variation was shown in the relative proportion of diatoms and dinoflagellates in the ECS in recent years. Based on the dada collection of phytoplankton species in the past in the ECS, this review focuses on analyzing the composition and diversity of red tide and red tide species. This review can provide a reference for interpreting results future studies on biodiversity of phytoplankton and red tides in the ECS and other regions.
