| Abstract: | Communication problems often occur when highly specialized and complex environmental and resource data are mapped for use by people with a limited technical background. The effectiveness of the communication structure surrounding the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Hydrological Atlas Series was investigated. A theoretical communication structure was developed, and interviews were conducted with personnel at the USGS Water Resources Division (WRD) to identify strengths and weaknesses of current map project procedures at the division. If employed by an organization such as the WRD, this communication model could provide guidance to aid the division to become self-adjusting in the production of a useful, but flexible, map product. |
