The writing of civic novel with heary urban custom is of long standing and well established history in China.The modern Chinese civic novelist inherited and developed the tradition of the urban novels by standing on the townsmen's position in representing the daily life of ordinary townsmen,which has exerted a strong influence on modern Chinese civic novel.It has formed two prime periods,and the narration type of modern civic novel can be divided into three types:the Beijing bystreets,Shanghai lanes,the regions of southern Yangtze River,and the bays of the south,etc.All of these reflect the strong municipal characteristics,embodying the values of folklore and aesthetic charms.
