Abstract:Magnetostratigraphical data on the Late Cretaceous Magnetic Quiet Zone (normal geomagnetic polarity zone Jalal) are reviewed. This zone was first defined by Shmeleva (1963) in deposits of the Fergana Ridge (U.S.S.R.), and was there found to contain a reversed (R) magnetozone, named the Kuldja, which was traced to various regions of the U.S.S.R. The Kuldja zone corresponds to magnetozone Gubbio A — defined at Gubbio (Italy). Palaeontological data suggest that it spans the boundary between the Santonian and Campanian stages.
