Speeding up Oil-Gas Exploration in South China

The original petroleum geologic conditions of South China is the best in our country, then becomes the poorest after reformation and de- struction. For nonmetamorphic sedimentary rock of South China from Sinian of Later Proterozoic to Tertiary of Cenozoic, it is character- ized by being complete in sequences, huge in thickness, rich in oil source and widely dispersed in oil-gas seepage. So far as petroleum exploration is concerned, it has bright prospects but big risks owing to its complicated geological conditions. Since it is just located in the intersection of stress caused by activities of Indian, Eurasian and Pacific plates, the tectonic movement was strong, which result- ed in more and big faults in South China. There are 17 targets favor- able for petroleum exploration. Based on comprehensive petroleum geologic conditions, South China may be divided into live zones. The paper stresses the effectiveness of regional depositional thick- ness on the choice of targets. It is considered that the research on hydrocarbon-generating and tectonic movement of marine sequences has to be combined with hydrocarbon migration, accumulation, remigration and reaccumulation.
