The Variscan mountain belt of Central Europe will be presented and explained by a schematic block-diagram. As documented in front of the figure the present structural zones are exfoliated and denudated relics of a postulated high cordillera as shown in the background. The horizontal surfaces of the frontal blocks represent the epi-Variscan peneplain of Permian age. This geological and paleo-geophysical reference level is yet approximately parallel to the Mesozoic and Cainozoic Moho at the bottom of the different blocks. The mountain range was situated at the Southern border of the Old-Red-Continent. The Rhenohercynian Zone (RH), the Saxothuringian Zone (ST) and the Moldanubian Zone (MD) are interpreted as segmented block-like slices of different levels within the asymmetric mountain belt. According to this geodynamic scenary we suppose that the north-dipping Variscan subduction zone was situated probably beneath the southern borders of the Alps. Hidden parts of the not subducted oceanic lithosphere of the Paleo-Tethys may be preserved within the Mediterranean crust.
