Abstract: | Actively star-forming galaxies are an important component of the local universe. They provide a unique opportunity to study the violent star-formation events that were much more prevalent at higher redshifts, probably triggered by the merging of galaxies. Advances arising from new satellite and ground-based observations, as well as sophisticated modelling techniques, were discussed at the RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting held on 9 December 2005, summarized by Linda J Smith and Johan H Knapen. |
