Iron porphyrins in coal from the United States |

| Abstract: | Iron porphyrins have been isolated from seven U.S. humic coals of various geological ages. Mass spectrometry shows that for the higher rank coals the porphyrins comprise an homologous series of alkyl derivatives (C27-C32). Mesoheme is detected in a Cretaceous lignite from Montana. |
