Abstract:More than 50 river basins with gauging stations were chosen for study on relations between sediment yield and basin characteristics in the Middle Yellow River Basin of China. With drainage areas ranging from 500 to 2,500 km2, these basins can be categorized into 7 types with different physiographical backgrounds. A bulk set of data on sediment yield and basin characteristics, such as surface material, vegetation cover, and morphological features, were collected using remote sensing combined with field investigation. Based on these data, a statistical technique was used to comprehensively analyze the response of sediment yield to basin characteristics. The results show that the best correlation occurs between specific sediment yield and surface material, followed subsequently by vegetation cover and drainage density. Precipitation has a minor influence on sediment yield compared with the former three factors. Due to heavy disturbance of vegetation coverage, surface material, and morphological development, single characteristic relations could not adequately describe specific sediment yield. Thus, a multiple-characteristic relation was developed between specific sediment yield and basin characteristics. Morphological features and rainfall could exert an important influence on sediment production of the river basins only when vegetation and surface material are homogenous.
