Abstract:In this paper a genetic model summarization of the evolution mechanism of the uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau was made on the basis of a vast number of research achievements obtained using comprehensive palaeogeographie approach and geochrono-logical method on the magnitude, forms and history of the plateau uplift. An emphasis was put. on discussion of crustal thickening-lithospheric thinning-isostatic compensation-strike slip mass-sliding during crustal shortening, and mass-balance between uplift, erosion and deposition as two key lines in the investigation of the thermo-tectonie evolution of the plateau uplift. Ultimately, satisfactory approximate mathematical expressions for the uplift evolution process of the plateau was obtained by means of model calculation. Furthermore, in the light of some theoretical consideration of the alte-nating tectonic uplift and uplift due to isustatic adjustment, the whole process of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau uplift was divided into three periods: slow uplifting period, wavy uplifting period and period of Quaternary rapid uplift.
