QUANTIFYING AND MITIGATING FLOOD RISK IN RAPIDLY AGGRADING FLUVIAL SYSTEMS
Authors:Brad R HALL
Abstract:Aggrading fluvial systems present special challenges to quantifying and mitigating flood risk. Northwest Hydraulic Consultants has recently identified the magnitude of flood risk on several drainage basins in the San Francisco Bay Area for flood hazard mitigation. These drainages vary considerably in drainage area, bed material characteristics, and mode of sediment transport, and man induced influences on drainage pattern and morphology. Marked similarities in sedimentation induced flood hazard aggravation. however. exists between these systems. This paper will summarize key study approach methodologies, data analysis. numerical modeling procedures, and design recommendations for mitigating flood hazard.
