Abstract:The red boulder clay contents of Fe3+, Al3+and a little Ca2+,Mg2+ in the chemical composition. Its raiio of SiO2 over Al2O3 is 1.26 to 1.68 which reaches partly the standard of late-rite. The clay mineral is mainly composed of kaolinite which is a product of pedogonic process. It is clear that sediments have been subjected to intense chemical weathering. Its formation can be divided into two stages: the first stage is deposition and the second is weathering under wet and hot climate. The initial texture of Yangjiaoling's red boulder clay was transformed by weathering and resulted in many new characteristics, such as the accumulation of Fe3+, Al3+ and the addition of clay fraction. It is apparent that the sediments which formed in Middle Pleistocene can not directly be compared with those formed in recent period. Thus, the hypothesis of debris flow is no longer valid because it does not consider factors of weathering. The hypothesis of glacia-tion is correct.
