Abstract:Based on historical CTD data and partial seismic lines from the EW0210 cruise, "salt finger" thermohaline staircases were identified in the Gulf of California for the first time, and their scale and lateral extensions were clearly understood. The analysis reveals that there are mainly thermohaline staircases with large mixed layer thicknesses in the water depth range of 100~600 m, in which the well-mixed layers can be tens or even hundreds of meters thick, with good continuity in the horizontal direction. The heat flux at the interface is mainly concentrated in -0.1 to -0.2 W·m-2, and the salt flux is mainly concentrated in -1×10-7 to -2×10-7m·s-1. Due to the influence of the internal tidal waves or eddies caused by the topography, these staircases are fluctuating strongly, with large undulations, and vertical displacements of some reflective layers can even reach 80 m. It is thus inferred that the staircases structure is being destroyed.
Keywords:Thermohaline staircases  Double-diffusion parameters  Seismic oceanography  Gulf of California
