FROM GROWTH TO DEVELOPMET:A REVIEW ON THOUGHTS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CLUB OF ROME

In the evolution of the concept from growth to development,the Club of Rome played a role of spokesman of the age.The Club of Rome, established in 1968, was an unofficial organization concerning human future and taking actions consciously. A series of its reports have produced great influence.The Limits to Growth(1972)disputed he feasibility of simply seeking economic growth,and also set up the pessimist image for The Club of Rome. Mankind at the Turning Point(1974) suggested the sustainability by combining growth with development,the thought of organic growth. The Club of Rome explored the realistic ways to organic growth.In 1977,Aurelio Peccei,the chairman of the club first stated explicitly in his book The Human Quality that the concept of growth was being replaced rapidly by development. After 1977,the Club of Rome put its emphasis on the basic factors of development other than sustainability. That resulted in loss of opportunity to form the concept of sustainable development.Nevertheless, its contribution to the thought of sustainable development is worth the great respect by the world.
