| Abstract: | Conditions for the existence of nonlinear Rossby periodic and solitary wave solutions in the atmosphere and oceans are studied with the aid of the phase plane geometrical qualitative theory of a dynamic system defined by the differential equation. The expression of the velocity and some diagnostic relations among the parameters in nonlinear waves are obtained. It proves that characteristic vorticity is restricted, implying that too strong vorticity is unallowable so as to avoid the breakdown of the waves. |
