Abstract:As effective energy-dissipating devices,viscous dampers have been extensively applied in steel structures.Nonetheless,practical design methods for steel structures with viscous dampers remain to be further investigated due to ductile and damping characteristic of steel structures.A practical energy dissipation design method for steel structures based on ductility demand of viscous dampers is proposed in the paper.First,the ductility demand of viscous dampers and the number of dampers are determined based on the inter-story drift performance objectives and expected additional damping ratio.Then,examination of structural control effectiveness and optimization of viscous dampers layout are carried out.The paper presents two three-level design target instances to verify the validity the proposed energy dissipation design method in various steel structures.Results indicate that the damper provides a maximum force at 37.5%of the shear force.
