Research on satellite altimeter significant wave height in the Southern Ocean with drifting buoy

Abstract:With the improvement of technology and data processing methods, the calibrated satellite altimeter data has been widely recognized. However, due to the lack of in situ wave data in the Southern Ocean, the accuracy of data obtained by satellite altimeters under extreme weather conditions is still being questioned. During the 36th Antarctic Expedition in 2020, China deployed an inductively coupled drifting buoy which can provide reliable in site wave data in the Southern Ocean. By comparing the significant wave height of drifting buoy for 246 days from January 27 to September 29, 2020 with 7 satellite altimeters data, the influence of space window selection on the comparison between satellite altimeter and buoy data is studied.The time and space window of 30 min and 160 km aredetermined to compare the two kinds of wave height data. The results show that the two kinds of data have high consistency, but there are some differences between them. Finally, it is concluded that satellite altimeter data calibrated by in site wave data in other ocean areas may not be able to accurately measure the significant wave height in Southern Ocean and need to be furthercalibrated.
