Abstract:For the case where both pore fluids and solid grains are incompressible, the system of equations of motion including the inertia terms is established. A more simplified form of the system of equations is then obtained by introducing the dilatational and rotational displacement potentials. Based on these equations the velocities of propagation of, and the damping constant for the harmonic plane waves are calculated, and it is proved that only one P wave and one S wave are set up here in contrast with two P waves and one S wave as predicted by Biot for a more general case. Finally, a one-dimensional problem for a semi-infinite medium under surface dynamic loading is solved.
