Abstract:TheYellow River was dismembered and vanished at the maximum of the last glacial age (22ka B.P.-15ka B.P.) due to arid climate and deficient water. In Late Pleistocene (about 13Ka B.P.), the modern Yellow River began to join together, and emptied into the sea nearby the Yellow Sea trough southeast of the Shandong Peninsula. At the maximum of the transgression in Middle Ho-locene, the lower reaches of the Yellow River was in a state of unconcentrated flow, and its silt mainly deposited in the North China Plain. About 2000B.C., mankind began to harness the river for the development of production, mainly by dredging the waterways and silt, so that the river could transport silt to the lagoonal depressions of the North China Plain. From historical records, there were 7 great changes in the course of the Yellow River, and the Yellow River emptied into the sea through its north route for more than 3300 years of the last 4000 years. Now, the modern Yellow River has flowed through middle route for nearly 140 years, and changed its courses 10 times. Each of the changes has the four stages: overflowing, branching, confluence and course change.
