Age characters and significance of the gastropod shell beds of the Jiuxi- keng Formation in the Hepu basin of Guangxi

The sedimentary sequence of Member 3 of the Jiuxikeng Formation in Hepu Basin, Guangxi is chraacterized by dark grey, light grey mudstone intercalated grey siltstone and light grey fine sandstone which interbeds with the fine development of shell-beds formed by a large number of shells of gastropods. The fauna characteristics of gastropods show that Member 3 of the Juxiken Formation can be dated as Upper Eocene in age, and that the fauna can correlate well with those of Baise Basin. In the meanwhile, according to the litho-facies of shell-beds and preservation and ecological situation of gastropods, it is believed that the shell-beds represent storm event. So the shell-beds are not only good key bed of regional correlation in Hepu Basin, but also significant in event stratigraphy.
