GIS In-Service Teacher Training Based on TPACK

Abstract

This article introduces the geographic information systems (GIS) in-service teacher training, focusing on the intersection of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) for successful implementation of GIS in the classroom. Eleven social studies teachers in Georgia learned GIS technologies, inquiry-based learning, and social studies so that they could create technology-enhanced and inquiry-based lessons using GIS technologies. This article reports participating teachers’ opinions and attitudes of the TPACK-based GIS training. It also reports useful pedagogical methods of introducing GIS technologies to students and additional support for teachers to help them use GIS in their classrooms more often.     

An Evaluation of University World Geography Textbook Questions for Components of Spatial Thinking

ABSTRACT

Geography textbooks contain chapter or review questions that may engage students in spatial thinking. This research used Jo and Bednarz’s (2009) Taxonomy of Spatial Thinking to evaluate the percentage of spatial thinking questions in four university-level world geography course textbooks. The results from this study were then compared to the findings in Jo and Bednarz’s (2009) analysis of high school geography textbooks. Thirty-five percent of university level textbook questions are related to spatial thinking compared to twenty-four percent in high school geography textbooks. The results provide information useful to stakeholders, such as teachers, administrators, and textbook writers and may help these stakeholders to consciously incorporate the three components of spatial thinking as defined by the National Research Council (2006). A simplified taxonomy for identifying spatial-thinking concepts in textbook review questions is also suggested.     

THE “HIDDEN'’POPULATION: WASHINGTON ALLEY DWELLERS IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY∗

Though urban planning issues continue to be created largely by local problems, urban theorists have become sensitive to the indirect modifying effects of federal urban policy on the local land-use structure. Federal tax policies on income derived from multifamily real estate appear to have generated excessive apartment construction during the 1968–73 period in Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs. The consequence of these policies is evident in high multifamily suburban vacancy rates for Twin City apartments built during this period.

Identifying and Removing the Silences of Roma Culture in Polish School Texts

The Roma are the largest and, some scholars would argue, the most marginalized group in Europe, an observation evident in an examination of school texts for Polish children. Using the concept of the “geographies of silence,” we discuss the nature of text and graphical silences and the reasons behind the paucity of text, photo, and map coverage. We conclude by presenting photos that could be used in future texts to better inform Polish youth about a much-neglected part of their culture.     

多彩世界与中国启迪：主要发达国家近期经济地理学教材分析与思考

教材在经济地理学学科发展中具有重要作用。为加强中国经济地理学教材建设,本文选择英国、美国、加拿大、俄罗斯、德国、法国、日本等国近期出版的13本教材,进行内容特点的定性和定量分析。结果表明：(1)所有教材均侧重于经济活动的不同空间维度分析,较少考虑经济活动与自然地理环境条件的关系;但近期显示出对能源和矿产资源利用、绿色发展问题的部分关注。(2)对学科理论和实际问题的权衡差别较大,除少数（4部）教材理论分析内容占重要地位外,多数（9部）以对近期世界和相关国家出现的重大且空间性明显的实际问题分析为主,同时注重其理论的解释。(3)面向英语国家使用的教材较多关注世界性问题和国际上代表性理论观点,其他教材在理论和实际问题分析中,注意突出本国经济地理学特色：俄罗斯经济地理学已转向社会经济地理学,德国在承继规范研究传统基础上突出关系经济地理学,法国关注世界经济地理多样性,日本关注城镇和乡村社区经济地理研究。受此启迪,中国特色经济地理学教材建设中,应注重把握中国经济地理学发展的背景特色和研究成果特色,坚持经济地理学的地理性,突出特殊政府体制下和特殊文化积淀下的经济地理机制,突出大国经济空间格局规律和经济...     

DECLINING STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGE GEOGRAPHY AND THE DOWN-WRITING OF TEXTS

Student preparation for college showed significant declines through the 1970s, according to Scholastic Aptitude Tests and other indices. During the same period, scores declined on my standardized, mid-term exam used for introductory physical geography at UCLA. I suggest that the latter is primarily caused by the former. As a result of declining preparation and abilities, many physical geography texts have been down-written to a high-school level. These texts have grave implications for the quality of learning, recruiting of quality students, and academic respect for geography as a discipline.     

Putting together the pieces of the puzzle: Traces of New Zealand in international school geography textbooks

How does a fairly remote space (the islands of New Zealand) contribute to the development of geographical literacy in the geography textbooks of post‐socialist (Romania), Western (Germany) and post‐colonial (Mexico) countries? A four‐step analysis of three textbooks of international selection revealed different regionalisation cultures combined with traditional and recently implemented educational paradigms of geography education and led to a similar result. Despite the many ways in which New Zealand's geographical distinctiveness could be used to enhance geographical literacy, there are few operationalisations of educational targets that might contribute to sustainable long‐term learning. Further, these results also offer a possible explanation for the absence of the ‘southern lands’ on students' cognitive maps of the world.     

The beginning of geography didactics in Norway

At the end of the 19th century geography became a mandatory subject in primary and secondary schools in Norway. Geography was seen as a useful subject that contributed to the modernization of society, but also as a subject that strengthened the national ideology. A need for better education in geography arose and consequently some authors of geography textbooks wrote about teaching geography. In order to strengthen teachers’ education, geography was taught at university level, and to develop the subject it became necessary to relate it to other subjects, especially geology. The author shows that there are several similarities between the content of geography taught in Norwegian schools in the late 19th century and geography taught in schools today.
