Vertical distribution of fossil carotenoids in a sediment core from meromictic Mahoney Lake was studied. Besides okenone and demethylated okenone, lutein and zeaxanthin and-carotene isomers were identified. No carotenoids typical for purple nonsulfur or green sulfur bacteria were detected. The ratio of zeaxanthin to lutein (above 1:1 in all samples) indicates a dominance of cyanobacteria over green algae in the phytoplankton assemblages of the past. Okenone, which is found exclusively in Chromatiaceae, was the dominating carotenoid in all sediment zones.The oldest sediment layers containing okenone were deposited 11 000 years ago. Between 9000 and 7000 and since 3000 years b.p., Chromatiaceae reached a considerable biomass in the lake. Vertical changes in okenone concentration were not related to changes of paleotemperatures. In contrast, okenone concentrations decreased during periods of volcanic ash input. During most of the lake history, however, mean okenone concentrations were positively correlated with sedimentation rates. This indicates that vertical changes of okenone concentration in the sediment reflect past changes of purple sulfur bacterial biomass in the lake.According to these results, the past limnology of Mahoney Lake resembled that of the present with a sulfide-containing monimolimnion and a well-developed population of okenone-bearing purple sulfur bacteria.  相似文献

Aromatic hydrocarbons from benzene extracts of New Albany Shale were characterized. A biomarker that has a molecular weight of 546 and a structural configuration consistent with that of an alkyl-aromatic hydrocarbon (C40H66) was tentatively identified. It was found that the relative concentrations of the biomarker are indicative of differing levels of thermal maturity of the shale organic matter. A 40-carbon bicyclic carotenoid (C40H48) is proposed as the geochemical precursor of this biomarker. Thermal maturity of the shale organic matter can also be differentiated by observing differences in “fingerprints” as obtained by field-ionization mass spectrometry on the aromatic hydrocarbon fraction. Using this technique, we found that the more mature shale samples from southeastern Illinois contain more low molecular weight extractable aromatic hydrocarbons and the less mature shale samples from northwestern Illinois contain more high molecular weight extractable aromatic hydrocarbons. It was demonstrated that field-ionization and tandem mass spectrometric techniques through fingerprint and individual compound identification, are useful for shale aromatic hydrocarbon fraction characterization and for thermal maturation interpretation.  相似文献

Fry of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.), were air‐freighted from Hong Kong to New Zealand in October 1971. The fish were at first kept in tanks with a recirculating water supply, where they soon showed symptoms of parasitic infestation and suffered heavy mortality.

Attempts were made to remove parasites with chemotherapeutic treatment. Tripartiella sp., Dactylogyrus ctenopharyngodonis, and Gyrodactylus clenopharyngodontis were eliminated by prolonged bathing of the infected fish with quinine. Chemical treatment failed to eliminate Ichthyophthirius mullifiliis from the body surface and the gills, but the rate of spontaneous recovery of the fish from this disease was accelerated by keeping them in clean, running water. Experiments to remove the cestode Bothriocephalus gowkongensis from the intestine of the fish with tetravalent tin compounds and to control the intermediate host (Cyclops) in the water resulted in the eradiction of the cestode.

When parasitic infestations had been brought under control the fish were transferred to outdoor ponds, where they began to feed on aquatic and terrestrial vegetation and rapidly increased in size.  相似文献

Sedimentary rocks from the saline formation of the Lopare Basin were investigated. Sediments contain a moderate amount of immature to marginally mature algal organic matter deposited under slightly reducing to anoxic and slightly saline to hypersaline conditions. Almost all of the samples contain β-carotane in a relatively high quantity, and in some, it represents the most abundant compound in the total distribution of hydrocarbons. The objective of the study was to determine the conditions that are favourable to precursors of β-carotene and/or the preservation of the carotenoid hydrocarbon skeleton. Moreover, the dominant transformation pathways of β-carotene under different redox and salinity conditions, which lead to the formation of aromatic carotenoids were defined.  相似文献

Reverse-phase thin layer chromatography was used to quantify algal carotenoid degradation resulting from grazing by Daphnia magna in suspensions of lyophilized Oscillatoria utermöhlii, O. limnetica, Anabaena flos-aquae and Synechococcus sp. Three samples were removed every 24 h from 0 h to 144 h and the carotenoid, carbon and nitrogen content of the remaining algal-fecal mixture was determined. Grazing by Daphnia reduced carotenoid concentrations by 30%–80% after 144 h, with myxoxanthophyll being the most labile pigment in experiments with filamentous cyanophytes. However, as a group, the carotenoids were more resistant to the combined effects of grazing by Daphnia and bacterial action than were particulate algal carbon (78% to 82% lost by 144 h) or nitrogen (86%–90%) during the period in which easily digestible material remained. The maximal extent of carotenoid enrichment relative to particulate carbon ranged from 150% to 300% of initial pigment concentrations but declined with repeated coprophagy. On the basis of these results and published pigment budgets, we conclude both that fecal transportation of pigments may be an important determinant of carotenoid accumulation rates and that carotenoid stratigraphies should record predator-mediated changes in zooplankton community structure, especially in oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

Messinian marls from evaporitic cycle IV of the Gessoso-solfifera formation (Italy) are known to contain in high abundance the diaromatic carotenoid isorenieratene of green sulfur bacterial (Chlorobiaceae) origin along with a second diaromatic carotenoid. The previous tentative assignment of the latter as a cis diastereomer of isorenieratene has now been confirmed; this indicates that double bond isomerization occurs during early diagenesis and provides further evidence for the pathway proposed previously to link isorenieratene to a number of aromatic isoprenoid hydrocarbon biomarkers. Stable carbon isotopic data confirm the Chlorobiaceae origin of the intact all-trans isorenieratene isomer and indicate that the isomerization is accompanied by little or no kinetic isotope effect. Comparison of the δ13C values of each of the isolated carotenoids (measured as isorenieratane after hydrogenation) with those of their sulfide-bound counterpart in the polar fraction of the extracts (also measured as isorenieratane) indicates that sulfurization resulted in little depletion in 13C.  相似文献

To determine some of the environmental effects that influence the relative proportions of pigments in algae, high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis was employed to determine the relative amounts of common photosynthetic pigments in batch cultures of the diatoms,Fragilaria crotonensis andThalassiosira pseudonana, and the green algae,Scenedesmus abundans, andHaematococcus pluvialis, illuminated for 12 hours each day. Similar analyses were conducted in five-day experiments during which cultures ofF. crotonensis andS. quadricauda were kept in continuous darkness. Comparing the results to those for controls continuing to receive the daily illumination indicated that the diatoms and green algae react similarly to light deficiency. The relative amounts of the main accessory pigment in the diatoms, fucoxanthin, and that in the green alga, apparently lutein, decreased as a reaction to a lack of illumination, while the total chlorophyll level in algae of both groups remained nearly constant. Quantitative differences induced by the experimental conditions were considerably less that those observed among different species of diatom or among the different green algae, however. Finally, cultures ofS. quadricauda were analyzed and then kept for 43 days without the addition of any nutrients. A proportion of the culture was kept for this period in perpetual darkness while another continued to receive 12 hours of illumination. The results show that considerable changes occur as the cultures age, and that these changes occur more slowly in the darkness. Some consequences of these findings for phytoplankton production studies based on analyses of photosynthetic pigments are discussed.  相似文献
