This study examined the interactive effects of copper and elevated temperature and subsequent depuration on Platygyra acuta coral larvae. Larval mortality and motility were significantly affected by copper alone (70% and 100% inhibition respectively). Their respective lethal/inhibitory concentration (LC50/IC50) were 10–130% and 86–193% higher than those reported for other larvae. Temperature (ambient, 27 °C and elevated, 30 °C) alone and the combination of temperature and copper did not significantly affect both endpoints. This study provides the first quantitative data on depuration effect on resumption of larval motility after copper exposure, although no sign of larval recovery was observed. These findings suggest that the effects of copper pollution outweigh the thermal tolerance of coral larvae. High LC50 and IC50 recorded may be unique for corals from marginal reefs like Hong Kong which have already been exposed to high levels of copper pollution. 相似文献

Effect of Mixtures of Heavy Metals on the Biological Treatment of Sewages Containing Naphthalenesulfonic Acid Biological wastewater treatment processes can be destabilized considerably by heavy metals. In this investigation, the effect of loadings of heavy metals on the degradation of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid (2NS) by immobilized bacteria in continuously operated airlift-loop reactors was studied. Shock loadings with mixtures of cadmium and nickel, or cadmium and zinc, respectively, resulted in increases in inhibition compared to those observed with the single metals. In contrast, the 2NS-degradation was less inhibited by shock loadings with mixtures of nickel and zinc than by the single metal ions. Repeated shock loadings up to 100 mg L?1 nickel and 1000 mg L?1 zinc effected an adaptation of the microorganisms. Continuous loadings with up to 10 mg L?1 cadmium and nickel each, or with 50 mg L?1 nickel and 210 mg L?1 zinc, respectively, did not inhibit the degradation of 2NS. The permanent loadings led to an adaptation of the bacteria with an increased biosynthesis of proteins from 0.2 to 0.5 g g?1 cell dry weight. However, if the immobilized cells were incubated with mixtures of cadmium and nickel, the specific polysaccharide content decreased to less than 0.2 g g?1 cell dry weight, resulting in a detachment of the biofilms. 相似文献

Changes in the activities of two enzymes, viz., glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) following exposure to the pyrethroids fenvalerate and decis (deltamethrin), the carbamate sevin (carbaryl), singly, and the binary mixtures of fenvalerate + sevin and decis + sevin was studied in the nervous tissue of the fresh water snail Lymnaea acuminata. The total amount of the pesticides administered in the binary mixtures was very low as compared to the amount contained in the 40% LC50 and 80% LC50 of any of the pesticides when given alone. On the one hand, lower quantities of pesticides were administered, while on the other, there was greater enhancement in the activities of the two transaminases. Thus, synergism in case of transaminase activity was much more as compared to synergism when lethality was taken as a criterion. The order of effectiveness of the pesticides/mixtures was decis + sevin > fenvalerate + sevin > decis > fenvalerate > sevin. 相似文献
