The paper presents a conceptual design of an underwater star wars’ system, which will be more difficult to detect by the enemy than a recently proposed ‘surface’ star wars’ system. The paper suggests that for the proposed structures needed for the underwater star wars’ system, the material of construction should be a composite and not a metal, as use of the latter for large deep diving underwater vessels will result in such structures sinking to the bottom of the ocean like stones, due to the fact that they will have no reserve buoyancy. The paper also shows that composites have better sound absorption characteristics, thereby making the underwater structures difficult to detect through sonar equipment. It is proposed that these underwater structures should operate up to a depth of 7.16 miles (11.52 km), as at this depth, all of the oceans’ bottoms can be reached. The author shows that current technology can be used to construct and operate such vessels, but more progress needs to be made with metal matrix and ceramic composites, so that the hulls of underwater missiles and torpedoes can be constructed in these materials.  相似文献

The law of the sea has always been open to the charge of being a ‘covenant without a sword’ and its effectiveness when challenged by the perceived national security of a superpower is questionable. Attempts to limit and control antisubmarine warfare (ASW) have demonstrated that neither superpower is prepared to risk its second-strike capability for what may be an illusory legal protection. This article reviews developments relevant to ASW in the law of the sea and describes the significance of ASW to the superpowers' strategic objectives. The authors conclude by stressing the urgent need for effective arms control.  相似文献

A rapid real-time adjustment scheme is proposed for improving the precision of the conventional short-base line (SBL) positioning fix system used by submarines and other underwater vehicles. In the proposed approach, an initial position estimate is obtained by solving the conventional SBL tracking equations of the submarine given the assumptions of a constant speed of sound in water and a straight-line propagation path. In the first stage of the real-time adjustment procedure, this initial estimate is corrected using an iterative computation scheme based on a 3D geometry model. The improved position estimate is then used to compute a new, more accurate value of the speed of sound in water. Finally, in the second stage of the real-time adjustment procedure, the corrected speed of sound in water and the discrepancy between the original and corrected position estimates obtained in the first adjustment procedure are applied to update the coordinates of the submarine based on the second signal received from the pinger. The numerical results show that the proposed real-time adjustment system yields a significant improvement in the accuracy of the positioning fix estimates compared to those obtained from the conventional SBL method or the SBL method with the first adjustment procedure only.  相似文献
