In most design applications such as alignment of the berthing structure and breakwater alignment, it becomes necessary to determine the direction of design wave. There are two different approaches to determine wave direction. One involves the use of first order Fourier coefficients (mean wave direction) while the other uses second order Fourier coefficients (principal wave direction). Both the average wave direction over the entire frequency range (0.03–0.58 Hz) and the direction corresponding to the peak frequency are used in practice. In the present study, comparison is made on wave directions estimated based on first and second order Fourier coefficients using data collected at four locations in the west and east coasts of India. Study shows that at all locations, the mean and principal wave directions for frequencies ranging from 0.07 to 0.25 Hz (±0.5 times peak frequency) co-vary with a correlation coefficient of 0.99 but at lower and higher frequencies, difference between the parameters is large. Average difference between the mean wave direction at peak frequency and the average over the frequency related to spectral energy more than 20% of maximum value is less, around 13°. Estimation of Contamination of ERS-2 and POSEIDON Satellite Radar Altimetry Close to the Coasts of Australia 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
It is broadly acknowledged that the precision of satellite-altimeter-measured instantaneous sea surface heights (SSH) is lower in coastal regions than in open oceans, due partly to contamination of the radar return from the coastal sea-surface state and from land topography. This study investigates the behavior of ERS-2 and POSEIDON altimeter waveform data in coastal regions and estimates a boundary around Australia's coasts in which the altimeter range may be poorly estimated by on-satellite tracking software. Over one million 20 Hz ERS-2 (March to April 1999) and POSEIDON (January 1998 to January 1999) radar altimeter waveform data were used over an area extending 350 km offshore Australia. The DS759.2 (5'resolution) ocean depth model and the GSHHS (0.2 km resolution) shoreline model were used together to define the coastal regions. Using the 50% threshold retracking points as the estimates of expected tracking gate, we determined that the sea surface height is contaminated out to maximum distance of between about 8 km and 22 km from the Australian shoreline for ERS-2, depending partly on coastal topography. Using the standard deviation of the mean waveforms as an indication of the general variability of the altimeter returns in the Australian coastal region shows obvious coastal contamination out to about 4 km for both altimeters, and less obvious contamination out to about 8 km for POSEIDON and 10 km for ERS-2. Therefore, ERS-2 and POSEIDON satellite altimeter data should be treated with some caution for distances less than about 22 km from the Australian coast and probably ignored altogether for distances less than 4 km. 相似文献

Japanese fisheries production in the Japan/East Sea between 1958 and 2003 increased to their peak (1.76 million tons) in the late 1980s and decreased abruptly with the collapse of Japanese sardine. Catch results for 58 fisheries and various environmental time-series data sets and community indices, including mean trophic level (MTL) and Simpson’s diversity index (DI), were used to investigate the impacts of fishing and climate changes on the structure of the fish community in the Tsushima warm current (TWC) region of the Japan/East Sea. The long-term trend in fisheries production was largely dependent on the Japanese sardine that, as a single species, contributed up to 60% of the total production in the Japanese waters of the Japan/East Sea during the late 1980s. Excluding Japanese sardine, production of the small pelagic species was higher during 1960s and 1990s but lower during 1970s and 1980s. This variation pattern generally corresponds with the trend in water temperature, warmer before early 1960s and after 1990s but colder during 1970s and 1980s. The warm-water, large predatory fishes and cold water demersal species show opposite responses to the water temperature in the TWC region, indicating the significant impact of oceanic conditions on fisheries production of the Japan/East Sea. Declines in demersal fishes and invertebrates during 1970s and 1980s suggested some impact of fishing. MTL and DI show a similar variation pattern: higher during 1960s and 1990s but lower during 1970s and 1980s. In particular, the sharp decline during the 1980s resulted from the abundant sardine catches, suggesting that dominant species have a large effect on the structure of the fish community in the Japan/East Sea. Principal component analysis for 58 time-series data sets of fisheries catches suggested that the fish community varied on inter-annual to inter-decadal scales; the abrupt changes that occurred in the mid-1970s and late 1980s seemed to correspond closely with the climatic regime shifts in the North Pacific. These results strongly suggest that the structure of the fish community in the Japan/East Sea was largely affected by climatic and oceanic regime shifts rather than by fishing. There is no evidence showing “fishing down food webs” in the Japan/East Sea. However, in addition to the impacts of abrupt shifts that occurred in the late 1980s, the large predatory and demersal fishes seem to be facing stronger fishing pressure with the collapse of the Japanese sardine. 相似文献

In this article a method to estimate the mean upcrossing intensity, μ(u), of a stochastic process is proposed. It is assumed that the stochastic process is a sum of a Gaussian process and a second-order correction term. The method is based on the two-dimensional Saddlepoint approximation. The accuracy of the method is tested on processes having analytical solutions for μ(u). Numerical examples are given where the stochastic process represents (i) the horizontal response of a floating offshore structure in a Gaussian sea, and (ii) the response of a structure subjected to a Gaussian wind velocity process. In addition, the estimates are compared to empirical upcrossing intensities of simulated responses. We propose a methodology, called multilevel local–global (MLLG) upscaling, for generating accurate upscaled models of permeabilities
or transmissibilities for flow simulation on adapted grids in heterogeneous subsurface formations. The method generates an
initial adapted grid based on the given fine-scale reservoir heterogeneity and potential flow paths. It then applies local–global
(LG) upscaling for permeability or transmissibility [7], along with adaptivity, in an iterative manner. In each iteration of MLLG, the grid can be adapted where needed to reduce
flow solver and upscaling errors. The adaptivity is controlled with a flow-based indicator. The iterative process is continued
until consistency between the global solve on the adapted grid and the local solves is obtained. While each application of
LG upscaling is also an iterative process, this inner iteration generally takes only one or two iterations to converge. Furthermore,
the number of outer iterations is bounded above, and hence, the computational costs of this approach are low. We design a
new flow-based weighting of transmissibility values in LG upscaling that significantly improves the accuracy of LG and MLLG
over traditional local transmissibility calculations. For highly heterogeneous (e.g., channelized) systems, the integration
of grid adaptivity and LG upscaling is shown to consistently provide more accurate coarse-scale models for global flow, relative
to reference fine-scale results, than do existing upscaling techniques applied to uniform grids of similar densities. Another
attractive property of the integration of upscaling and adaptivity is that process dependency is strongly reduced, that is,
the approach computes accurate global flow results also for flows driven by boundary conditions different from the generic
boundary conditions used to compute the upscaled parameters. The method is demonstrated on Cartesian cell-based anisotropic
refinement (CCAR) grids, but it can be applied to other adaptation strategies for structured grids and extended to unstructured

The propagation of unmodelled systematic errors into coordinate time series computed using least squares is investigated,
to improve the understanding of unexplained signals and apparent noise in geodetic (especially GPS) coordinate time series.
Such coordinate time series are invariably based on a functional model linearised using only zero and first-order terms of
a (Taylor) series expansion about the approximate coordinates of the unknown point. The effect of such truncation errors is
investigated through the derivation of a generalised systematic error model for the simple case of range observations from
a single known reference point to a point which is assumed to be at rest by the least squares model but is in fact in motion.
The systematic error function for a one pseudo-satellite two-dimensional case, designed to be as simple but as analogous to
GPS positioning as possible, is quantified. It is shown that the combination of a moving reference point and unmodelled periodic
displacement at the unknown point of interest, due to ocean tide loading, for example, results in an output coordinate time
series containing many periodic terms when only zero and first-order expansion terms are used in the linearisation of the
functional model. The amplitude, phase and period of these terms is dependent on the input amplitude, the locations of the
unknown point and reference point, and the period of the reference point's motion. The dominant output signals that arise
due to truncation errors match those found in coordinate time series obtained from both simulated data and real three-dimensional
