Abstract. The influence of corallivores on coral community structure of eastern Pacific reefs has been considered less important then that of abiotic oceanographic factors. The data that support this assumption, however, are only available for Central American reefs. To assess the role of predation on hermatypic corals in a different regional reef environment, the abundance, spatial distribution and consumption rate of three corallivores: the echinoid Eucidaris thouarsii (Valenciennes), the asteroid Acanthaster planci (Linnaeus) and the teleostean fish Arothron meleagris (Bloch & Schneider), were estimated at Cabo Pulmo reef, Gulf of California, México (23°25' N, 109°25' W). Statistically, the abundances of the species did not change in any sections of the reef (mean values: E. thouarsii , 0.17 indiv. · m−2; A. planci , 1.9 indiv. · m−2; A. meleagris , 39 indiv. · ha−1). The average daily individual consumption rates of coral were calculated at 1.83 g CaCO3· m−2 for E. thouarsii , 118.4 cm2 for A. planci , and 16.38 g CaCO3· m−2 for A. meleagris , and were lower than those reported for Central American reefs. Considering the mean estimated carbonate production (7.9 kg CaCO3· m−2· a−1), corallivores eliminate less than 4% of the coral standing stock of Cabo Pulmo reef. The low corallivore population density and consumption rates, together with high local coral cover, indicate that corallivores are not key factors determining scleractinian abundance in this marginal reef.  相似文献

We hypothesize that the North Pacific transition zone chlorophyll front (TZCF) can episodically deliver enhanced phytoplankton levels that are linked to the emergence of adult populations of the coral eating starfish Acanthaster planci. In some years, the seasonally migrating TZCF bathes the northwest Hawaiian Islands with chlorophyll-a rich waters during the winter months that coincide with peak starfish spawning and provide ideal conditions for A. planci larval survival. We found significant relationships between starfish populations in the North Pacific and the southernmost latitude of the TZCF, chlorophyll-a concentrations, sea surface temperature, and Ekman transport indices since 1967. We propose that TZCF-triggered primary outbreaks are followed by secondary outbreaks throughout the region, in accordance with the surface currents and separated by a sequential time lag. Our historical confirmation suggests outbreaks are predictable, which has immediate coral reef conservation and management consequences.  相似文献

长棘海星(Acanthaster planci)的暴发是导致我国南海乃至印度—太平洋海域珊瑚礁退化的主要原因之一。浮游幼体的密度是决定成体种群是否暴发的重要指标,但是由于幼体肉眼不可见且不易分辨,常规调查和显微镜观察均无法有效检测到自然海域的长棘海星幼体,因此迫切需要开发一种高灵敏性且特异性的长棘海星幼体检测技术。本研究针对长棘海星幼体线粒体细胞色素氧化酶亚基I(mt COI,mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I)基因序列,建立了基于聚合酶链式反应(PCR,polymerase chain reaction)的长棘海星幼体特异性检测技术,并对西沙七连屿珊瑚礁海域的长棘海星幼体进行了检测。结果表明,设计筛选的4对特异性引物均可以扩增长棘海星Apmt COI基因片段,且与蓝指海星(Linckia laevigata)、面包海星(Culcita novaeguineae)、粒皮海星(Choriaster granulatus)和吕宋棘海星(Echinaster luzonicus)没有交叉反应。在退火温度为58.5℃时,引物2aooni F/2...  相似文献

Occasional population outbreaks of the crown‐of‐thorns sea star, Acanthaster planci, are a major threat to coral reefs across the Indo‐Pacific. The presumed association between the serial nature of these outbreaks and the long larval dispersal phase makes it important to estimate larval dispersal; many studies have examined the population genetic structure of A. planci for this purpose using different genetic markers. However, only a few have focused on reef‐scale as well as archipelago‐scale genetic structure and none has used a combination of different genetic markers with different effective population sizes. In our study, we used both mtDNA and microsatellite loci to examine A. planci population genetic structure at multiple spatial scales (from <2 km to almost 300 km) within and among four islands of the Society Archipelago, French Polynesia. Our analysis detected no significant genetic structure based on mtDNA (global FST = ?0.007, P = 0.997) and low levels of genetic structure using microsatellite loci (global FST = 0.006, P = 0.005). We found no significant isolation by distance patterns within the study area for either genetic marker. The overall genetically homogenized pattern found in both the mitochondrial and nuclear loci of A. planci in the Society Archipelago underscores the significant role of larval dispersal that may cause secondary outbreaks, as well as possible recent colonization in this area.  相似文献
