Kinetic study of the dehydroxylation of chrysotile asbestos with temperature by in situ XRPD 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The kinetics of the dehydroxylation of chrysotile was followed in situ at high temperature using real-time conventional and
synchrotron powder diffraction (XRPD). This is the first time kinetics parameters have been calculated for the dehydroxylation
of chrysotile. The value of the order of the reaction mechanism calculated using the Avrami model indicates that the rate-limiting
step of the reaction is a one-dimensional diffusion with an instantaneous nucleation or a deceleratory rate of nucleation
of the reaction product. Hence, the rate-limiting step is the one-dimensional diffusion of the water molecules formed in the
interlayer region by direct condensation of two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom. The calculated apparent activation energy
of the reaction in the temperature range 620–750 °C is 184 kJ mol−1. The diffusion path is along the axis of the fibrils forming the fibers. The amorphous or short-range ordered dehydroxylate
of chrysotile is extremely unstable because forsterite readily nucleates in the Mg-rich regions. Moreover, it is less stable
than the dehydroxylate of kaolinite, the so-called metakaolinite, which forms mullite at about 950 °C. This difference is
interpreted in terms of the different nature of the two ions Mg2+ and Al3+ and their function as glass modifier and glass-forming ion, respectively.

It is estimated that nearly $100 billion has been spent on removal of asbestos-bearing materials from schoolrooms, public and commercial buildings, and homes. This removal continues to this day despite the publication of an advisory document in 1990 by the US Environmental Protection Agency that states most removal is unnecessary and is even counterproductive both in terms health protection and costs. Concern over low exposure to substances that are designated as carcinogens is based on the false concept that even the smallest exposure to such substances can increase cancer risk. The expression one molecule of a chemical or one asbestos fiber can possibly produce a tumor is repeated over and over until it is accepted as a truth. Over 1400 air samples taken in 219 North American school buildings show the average fiber level to be 0.00022 fibers per milliliter of air. Using the most pessimistic models and attendance in the school for 6 h a day, five days a week, for 14 years, the calculated risk is one excess cancer death per million lifetimes. In contrast, the risk of dying from a lightning strike is 35 deaths per million lifetimes. Ambient air asbestos concentrations measured in the chrysotile asbestos mining towns of Quebec are 220 to 2200 times greater than that measured in the average schoolroom, yet the women living their entire lives in these towns show no increased cancer risk. The asbestos abatement program in the United States is a public policy debacle. 相似文献

The Río Guanajibo serpentinite body (RGSB) near Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, is part of an ophiolite mélange thrust in an oceanic convergent zone. The aim of this study was to characterize the extent and chronology of serpentinization within this peridotite mass. Mineralogy, microstructures, and veining episodes within the RGSB were characterized using optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and structural analyses. This study identified, for the first time, all three serpentine polymorphs (i.e., antigorite, chrysotile, lizardite) in serpentinite samples collected from Puerto Rico. Lizardite, the initial serpentine mineral formed from widespread hydration of olivine, was found throughout serpentinite samples. Chrysotile was the most abundant polymorph observed in sheared serpentinite samples, consistent with conditions favoring low fluid to rock ratios, supersaturation and abundant porosity. Antigorite was observed as a replacement texture in serpentinites that were not exposed to greenschist facies metamorphic conditions, and were frequently found in veins with a shear component. The results indicate that metamorphic conditions do not exclusively dictate polymorph formation. The mineralogy and textures observed within the different vein generations reflect the formation conditions, and deformational mechanisms, that occurred during the serpentinization process; six veining episodes (V1 – V6) were identified and grouped into four stages of serpentinization. Stage one (V1 and V2 type veins) represents the earliest stages of serpentinization and was characterized by microscopic fracture networks that formed as a result of cracking during the initial hydration of olivine under low water/rock ratios. During stage two (V3 and V4 type veins), fibrous crack - seal veins formed to accommodate continued volume expansion, via incremental fracture openings, caused by continued hydration of olivine. The ascension of serpentinite into the upper lithosphere was inferred to occur during Stage three; V5 type veins are associated with this stage. Textures and vein morphologies, representing supersaturated conditions and a decrease in temperature, were observed. Stage 4 (V6 type veins) was characterized by shear deformation features, which formed as a result of thrusting associated with the emplacement of the RGSB or Late Eocene transpression and fault reactivation along the Caribbean plate boundary. 相似文献

It was previously observed that sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) is degraded in the presence of chrysotile fibres. A higher catalytic efficiency was obtained than the reported values for TiO2 under the same conditions. Chrysotile, a clay mineral fibre of low cost and relatively abundant, probably acts as a catalyst through an Advanced Oxidative Process (AOP) involving free radical formation. In this work, experiments with non‐ionic – Triton X‐45 (octil‐phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol) – and cationic – Herquat 3500 (alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride) – surfactants were carried out. Diluted aqueous solutions (50 ppm) of these surfactants were kept in contact with chrysotile (4.0 g) in the dark at room temperature. The aromatic ring disappearance was followed through the absorbance peaks at 224 nm (Triton X‐45) and 208 nm (Herquat 3500) in the UV spectra. After 4 h, reductions in the surfactant solution concentration of 65.0% and 35.0% were observed for the Triton X‐45 and the Herquat 3500 surfactants, respectively. In both cases, reactions carried out without aeration showed a lower reduction of the aromatic ring concentration (30.0% less) when compared to the values obtained for the systems with airflow. The system containing the non‐ionic surfactant seems to achieve equilibrium after 2 h, what is not observed for the cationic surfactant system. 相似文献

The much publicised problem with major asbestos pollution and related health issues in South Africa, has called for action
to be taken to negate the situation. The aim of this project was to establish a prioritisation index that would provide a
scientifically based sequence in which polluted asbestos mines in Southern Africa ought to be rehabilitated. It was reasoned
that a computerised database capable of calculating such a Rehabilitation Prioritisation Index (RPI) would be a fruitful departure
from the previously used subjective selection prone to human bias. The database was developed in Microsoft Access and both
quantitative and qualitative data were used for the calculation of the RPI value. The logical database structure consists
of a number of mines, each consisting of a number of dumps, for which a number of samples have been analysed to determine
asbestos fibre contents. For this system to be accurate as well as relevant, the data in the database should be revalidated
and updated on a regular basis. 相似文献

Naturally occurring asbestos in eastern Australia: a review of geological occurrence, disturbance and mesothelioma risk 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Marc Hendrickx 《Environmental Geology》2009,57(4):909-926
Potential asbestos-bearing rocks account for about 0.2% of the land area of eastern Australia. The main mode of occurrence
is as narrow cross fibre and slip fibre veins of chrysotile asbestos in serpentinised ophiolite complexes along the boundaries
of major tectonic domains. Smaller deposits of chrysotile and amphibole asbestos occur in metamorphosed mafic and ultramafic
rocks associated with the Macquarie Volcanic Arc in New South Wales. Amphibole asbestos is also known from Proterozoic and
Palaeozoic amphibolite and from Devonian basalt. Natural asbestos-bearing materials in eastern Australia have been disturbed
by mining, road construction, agriculture and forestry, urban development and through natural weathering processes. Persons
most at risk of potential exposure to asbestos from natural sources include: farmers who work or live in areas where asbestos-bearing
materials may be routinely disturbed by agricultural activities; construction workers involved in large-scale earthwork projects
in areas underlain by asbestos-bearing rocks; and quarry workers who unwittingly disturb asbestos-bearing materials. Government
authorities and private enterprise need to take geological factors into account to reduce the likelihood of unplanned disturbance
of natural asbestos-bearing materials.
