Biotic consequences of a shift in invertebrate ecosystem engineers: Invasion of New Zealand rocky shores by a zone‐forming ascidian 下载免费PDF全文
The pervasive effects of invasive ecosystem engineers, that is those species that modify their environment, are well documented, but rarely have the broader impacts of one foundation invertebrate species being replaced by another been examined. In New Zealand, green‐lipped mussels, Perna canaliculus, commonly dominate wave‐exposed rocky shores. The recent appearance of an invasive ecosystem engineer, the ascidian Pyura doppelgangera, at the very northern tip of New Zealand now threatens to exclude these bivalves from this habitat. Here, we report major shifts in assemblages associated with the invader and chronicle its continued spread. We examined epibiota associated with clumps of mussels and clumps of Pyura from two rocky shore habitats—pools and emergent substrata at two locations. We detected some differences in species richness in biota associated with the two foundation species, but faunal abundance only differed between the locations. These minor changes were dwarfed by the shift in species composition within clumps of each foundation species. Molluscs, particularly gastropods, and crustaceans dominated the assemblage within mussels. In contrast, tubicolous polychaetes dominated the fauna associated with the ascidian. Sessile epifauna, notably barnacles and calcareous tube‐dwelling polychaetes, were common on mussels, but never encountered on the ascidian. Multivariate analysis revealed marked dissimilarity (>80%) between the characteristic mussel and ascidian faunas with virtually no overlap. This biotic shift overshadowed any differences between habitats and locations. The broader implications of these faunal shifts for local and regional patterns of biodiversity, as well as ecosystem function, remain unclear, but deserve further attention. 相似文献

Japanese knotweed s.l. (Fallopia spp.) is a highly invasive clonal plant, best known from roadside and riparian habitats. Its expansion into beaches on Long
Island, NY, USA, represents a major habitat shift. I surveyed populations from beaches and wetlands and conducted a common
garden experiment to test for variation in drought tolerance and phenotype among populations and habitats. All populations
were composed mostly of first- and later-generation hybrids. I found significant variation among populations in growth, lamina
size, specific leaf area (SLA), and biomass allocation, in both the field and the common garden. Lamina size, growth, and
root-to-shoot responded plastically to drought treatment. Wetland populations tolerated drought as well as beach populations.
Differentiation in SLA between habitats suggests that some selection for beach genotypes may have occurred. It appears that
both hybridization and phenotypic plasticity are contributing to the expansion of Fallopia spp. into novel habitat. 相似文献

This paper presents a framework to improve the quality of investment decisions in petroleum. The model presented enables the decision-maker to explicitly consider two major objectives when evaluating new petroleum opportunities—financial and technological gain. We utilize MultiAttribute Utility Theory (MAUT) to consider simultaneously the technological challenges of petroleum exploration into the capital budgeting process of an exploration and production firm. The MAUT methodology presented in this work demonstrates that in some mature areas the advantages to exploration are restricted further only to financial gain, based upon the present economic potential of the basin. On the other hand, other seemingly less attractive areas, such as deep horizons in deep-water basins, may represent attractive targets for new exploration as a result of the interaction of financial gain and technological advancement. This advantage reflects the technological gain as a key factor for future operations for oil discoveries in areas with big geological potential. The model presented in this work enables the decision-maker to consider explicitly the risk and rewards associated with both financial and technological payoffs, the decision-maker's tolerance for those types of risks, and the relative importance of each of those objectives in the context of ongoing petroleum exploration decisions. 相似文献

Laser and camer data taken during the International Satellite Geodesy Experiment (ISAGEX) have been used in dynamical solutions
to obtain center-of-mass coordinates for the Astro-Soviet camera sites at Helwan, Egypt and Oulan Bator, Mongolia and East
European camera sites at Potsdam, German Democratic Republic and Ondrejov, Czechoslovakia. The results are accurate to about

Analysis of the refracted arrivals on a seismic reflection profile recorded along the wall of a tunnel at an iron mine near Thabazimbi, South Africa, shows variations in P-wave velocity in dolomite away from the de-stressed zone that vary between 4.4 and 7.2 km/s, though values greater than 5.8 km/s predominate along most of the profile. The seismic velocities at the tunnel wall, however, vary between 4.2 and 5.2 km/s. Time–depth terms are in the range from 0.1 to 0.9 ms, and yield thicknesses of the zone disturbed by the tunnel excavations of between 2 and 9 m. The very low seismic velocities away from the tunnel wall in two regions are associated with alcoves or ‘cubbies’ involving offsets in the wall of up to 10 m. The large variations in seismic velocity resolved over distances less than 15 m with signals of wavelength around 6–9 m are attributed to variations in the sizes and concentrations of fracture systems and cracks, and in the degree of groundwater saturation of the fracture systems. The results suggest that seismic velocity variations from reflection surveys may also assist modelling studies of the stress regime in deep mines, particularly if both P and S wave velocity variations can be determined. The seismic velocity variations inferred also show that application of refraction static corrections in the processing of ‘in-mine’ seismic reflection profiles is as important as in surface surveys, because of the higher frequencies of the seismic energy recorded in the deep mine environment. 相似文献

The debate surrounding US climate policy has been strongly influenced by concerns about the impact that placing a price on GHG emissions could have on potentially vulnerable populations, including senior citizens. This article shows that seniors would be one of the best protected groups under the climate policies recently debated in the US Congress. Moreover, low-income groups would also be protected generally under these proposals. This is due to a combination of existing government transfer programmes that automatically adjust benefit payments to account for inflation and provisions in the proposals. 相似文献

The sedimentary record covering the last 150 years was studied in the productive clear water lake Pyhäjärvi in SW Finland. The lake has faced significant human-induced changes: (1) the water level was lowered by almost 2 metres in the early 1850s; (2) planktivorous coregonid fishes were successively introduced, commencing in 1908; and (3) nutrient input from intensified agriculture has increased during this century.Sediments were sampled from the 25 m deep depression of the otherwise shallow lake by freeze-corer and were date by 210Pb-chronology and pollen stratigraphy. According to litho-, chemo-, 210Pb- and pollen stratigraphies, the sedimentary sequence consists of five different sedimentary facies, each representing a different depositional environment resulting both from the lowering of water level and different stages of final deposition. The sediments in the depression are believed to have been deposited orderly, but, as a result of resuspension, they have a substantial littoral sediment input.After the lowering of the lake level, oxygen content in the depression is believed to have decreased on the basis of black coloration (sulfides) of the sediment from 1870–1880 onwards. The oxygen deficit worsened after the 1940s when e.g. iron, zinc, calcium and phosphorus were increasingly liberated into the water body. In contrast, diatoms, chironomids and cladoceran communities were notably stable, with the most important biotic changes being: 1) the decreased body size of the cladoceran Bosmina coregoni, apparently due to intensive selective predation by the introduced whitefish; and 2) increased abundances of the diatom Fragilaria crotonensis, and the profundal chironomid Chironomus plumosus f. semirectus after the 1950s, suggesting an increase in the trophic status of the lake. Eutrophication was probably in response to increased nutrient supply due to intensified cultivation and use of industrial fertilizers in the lake's drainage. 相似文献

Anthropogenic impacts in large rivers are widely studied, but studies of recovery once a disturbance has stopped are uncommon. This study examines the biogeomorphic recovery of a 40-km river corridor on the mid-Apalachicola River, Florida following the cessation of dredging, disposal, and snag removal in 2002. This failed navigation project resulted in vegetation losses (~166 ha between 1941 and 2004), river widening, and increased point bar areas. We used paired sets of imagery for a 10-year period during the recovery process at two different flow levels to assess sand bar change, land cover change, and their spatial variations. Most large sand bars decreased significantly in area due to growth of pioneer species, typically from the bankside of the bar. Mean bar area shrank 0.17 and 0.20 ha for the 30th and 1st percentile flows, respectively. For the entire study area, both water-level comparisons showed gains in vegetation (23.36 and 15.83 ha), compensated by losses in the extent of water (16.83 and 8.55 ha) and sand bar losses (6.53 and 7.28 ha). Overall, these gains during the 10-year passive recovery period are equivalent to ~15% of the vegetation losses that resulted from the navigational dredging. As found in other studies, most of the pioneer vegetation grew approximately 2 m relative elevation above the low-water surface. The initial length of the tree line and the area of herbaceous growth both had a significant and positive relationship with the area of new vegetation growth over the study interval. As parts of the river are healing, reduced channel capacity from narrowing and tree growth will benefit the floodplain. As elsewhere, understanding of a river's biogeomorphology, hydrology, and disturbance history can help in selecting appropriate recovery metrics to further advance the understanding and management of disturbed floodplains. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Ammonium acetate dissolution experiments were performed on shell material of the modern bivalves, Crassostrea virginica (calcite) and Mercenaria mercenaria (aragonite). Their purpose was to determine the order of preferential dissolution of Sr, Mg and Ca; these results subsequently were compared with Sr, Mg and Ca data from other Recent as well as ancient mollusks.Results from these experiments suggest the following relative order of abundance of readily exchangeable Mg and Sr in biogenic carbonates: Mg(arag) > Mg(calc) > Sr(calc) > Sr(arag). It is apparent that incongruent dissolution of minerals with different solubilities cannot entirely explain the observed dissolution patterns for Sr, Mg and Ca in these biogenic carbonates. Secular changes in whole shell Mg and Sr concentrations for Recent and unrecrystallized fossil mollusks suggest an order of “ionic mobility” in diagenesis identical to the order of abundance for readily exchangeable ions found in the NH4Ac dissolution experiments. It is concluded that this “ionic mobility” is due to a post mortem, early diagenetic (pre-recrystallization) approach to equilibrium with the surrounding chemical environment. 相似文献
