Two samples of plant-rich limy sand collected from the 9- and 11-ft.-level of the Heron Island cay were subjected to 14C dating. Uncertainties related to secondary changes and contaminations, and the unknown transportation history of the woody material prior to accumulation at Heron Island, in combination with the relatively young age of the carbon, did not result in 14C values useful for correlation and absolute dating purposes.  相似文献

Of all terrestrial ecosystems, the productivity of deserts has been suggested to be the most responsive to increasing atmospheric CO2. The extent to which this prediction holds will depend in part on plant responses to elevated CO2under the highly variable conditions characteristic of arid regions. The photosynthetic responses ofLarrea tridentata , an evergreen shrub, to a step-increase in atmospheric CO2(to 550 μmolmol−1) were examined in the field using Free-Air CO2Enrichment (FACE) under seasonally varying moisture conditions. Elevated CO2substantially increased net assimilation rate (Anet) in Larrea during both moist and dry periods of the potential growing season, while stomatal conductance (gs) did not differ between elevated and ambient CO2treatments. Seasonal and diurnal gas exchange dynamics in elevated CO2mirrored patterns in ambient CO2, indicating that elevated CO2did not extend photosynthetic activity longer into the dry season or during more stressful times of the day. Net assimilation vs. internal CO2(A/Ci) responses showed no evidence of photosynthetic down-regulation during the dry season. In contrast, after significant autumn rains, Amax(the CO2saturated rate of photosynthesis) and CE (carboxylation efficiency) were lower in Larrea under elevated CO2. In situ chlorophyll fluorescence estimation ofLarrea Photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm) responded more to water limitation than to elevated CO2. These findings suggest that predictions regarding desert plant responses to elevated CO2should account for seasonal patterns of photosynthetic regulatory responses, which may vary across species and plant functional types.  相似文献

Recent drought across the desert Southwest US may strongly affect the physiological functioning of evergreen desert species that maintain leaves through these dry periods. In July 2002 we compared the ecophysiological performance of the open-canopied, small-leaved creosotebush (Larrea tridentata) to the dense-canopied, more broad-leaved jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) growing on a ridge-top, east- and west-facing slopes to assess how differences in leaf habit and exposure affect these species' ability to withstand severe drought. Standardized precipitation index (SPI) from 100 years precipitation data showed July 2002 rainfall was normal, but the 12-month period ending July 2002 was of extreme aridity (SPI = ?2.71). Predawn water potentials were extremely low, and lower in jojoba (?8.1 to ?9.5 MPa) than in Larrea (?6.6 to ?9.4 MPa). Chlorophyll fluorescence showed jojoba had more consistent photochemical performance than Larrea across three exposures, having higher optimal photosystem II (PSII) efficiency (Fv/Fm), lower light-adapted PSII yield, and better ability to thermally dissipate light energy (i.e. higher NPQ), especially in inner-canopy jojoba leaves. These findings suggest jojoba may better cope with high light under drought conditions, and that canopy shading in jojoba may reduce high-light stress. Moreover, lower Fv/Fm, NPQ and high PSII yields in Larrea was similar between east-facing and ridge-top locations, but achieved levels similar to jojoba on west-facing exposures. These findings suggest these drought-tolerant evergreens rely on different physiological mechanisms to cope with high light under extreme drought conditions.  相似文献

Plant community structure in the southwestern United States co-varies with soil surface characteristics due to their role in controlling water availability. At the University of Arizona Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill, we evaluated winter and summer season dynamics of photosynthesis in a dominant shrub species, Larrea tridentata (creosotebush), across soils with contrasting development of surface and sub-surface horizons. We measured pre-dawn water potential (Ψpd), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf nitrogen content (%N), and determined stable carbon isotope discrimination (Δ). There were no differences in these parameters throughout the winter, although Δ was higher and %N was lower on the clay than sandy soil early in the dry summer period, and gs was higher on the clay than sandy soil late in the summer season while precipitation decreased. We used path analysis to determine the relative influences of %N, gs and Ψpd on photosynthetic function (Δ) during the winter and summer seasons. There was no influence during the summer, although gs and %N had positive and negative impacts on Δ within the sandy soil type respectively during the winter. Across soil type, gs was the main driver of %N and Δ. Our study highlights the need to include soil type for understanding how physiological performance of L. tridentata varies over seasons within arid and semi-arid ecosystems.  相似文献

遥感数据是目前常用的空间数据,管理和查看遥感数据是各类地理信息系统的核心功能之一.其中,通过列表实现数据的分组管理以及通过时间轴实现数据的多时相展示是该类系统重要的遥感数据管理和查看方法.同时,通过浏览器对大量数据进行管理,会出现页面卡顿的现象.而通过多次执行JavaScript来修改DOM,是造成浏览器渲染速度慢、页面卡顿的重要原因.本文通过Vue.js框架中的虚拟DOM技术,有效地减少了对空间数据列表的DOM操作.并通过对比实验,说明了当需要发生大量DOM操作时,Vue.js框架具有更快的渲染速度,进而有效地解决了页面的卡顿问题.  相似文献
