Measurements of the equivalent width of the interstellar Lyman line from IUE spectra in the direction of the planetary nebulae NGC 7009 and BD+30°3639 are used to infer the H column density in these directions. Hydrogen 21 cm profiles are also used in connection with the ultraviolet data so that the expected rotation velocities and distances can be determined. The results are compared with recently published distances, in an attempt to distinguish between the short and long PN distance scales as applied to these objects. 相似文献

The oxygen abundance gradient relative to hydrogen is considered, as derived for galactic Hii regions and type II planetary nebulae. Changing atmospheric conditions often result in a data distribution shift in remote sensing images for different dates and locations making it difficult to discriminate between various classes of interest. To alleviate this data shift issue, we introduce a novel supervised classification framework, called Classify-Normalize-Classify (CNC). The proposed scheme uses a two classifier approach where the first classifier performs a rough segmentation of the class of interest (COI) in the input image. Then, the median signal of the estimated COI regions is subtracted from all image pixels values to normalize them. Finally, the second classifier is applied to the normalized image to produce the refined COI segmentation. The proposed methodology was tested to detect deforestation using bitemporal Landsat 8 OLI images over the Amazon rainforest. The CNC framework compared favorably to benchmark masks of the PRODES program and state-of-the-art classifiers run on surface reflectance images provided by USGS. 相似文献

Earth observation images are a powerful source of data about changes in our planet. Given the magnitude of global environmental changes taking place, it is important that Earth Science researchers have access to spatiotemporal reasoning tools. One area of particular interest is land-use change. Using data obtained from images, researchers would like to express abstractions such as ‘land abandonment’, ‘forest regrowth’, and ‘agricultural intensification’. These abstractions are specific types of land-use trajectories, defined as multi-year paths from one land cover into another. Given this need, this paper introduces a spatiotemporal calculus for reasoning about land-use trajectories. Using Allen’s interval logic as a basis, we introduce new predicates that express cases of recurrence, conversion and evolution in land-use change. The proposed predicates are sufficient and necessary to express different kinds of land-use trajectories. Users can build expressions that describe how humans modify Earth’s terrestrial surface. In this way, scientists can better understand the environmental and economic effects of land-use change. 相似文献

This work is basically concerned with grain nucleation occurring in protostellar envelopes. On the basis of the dissociation equilibrium theory, molecular and atomic abundances are obtained for massive protostar envelopes. The initial mass function (IMF) in the solar neighbourhood is determined on the basis of a recently derived history of the star formation rate (SFR) which shows the presence of a star formation burst about 8 Gyr ago. The observed present-day mass function (PDMF) is considered, and the average past distribution of stars of a given mass is estimated. Two cases are considered, namely (i) constant SFR, and (ii) variable SFR as derived from the new metallicity distribution of G dwarfs. The resulting IMF is compared with previous determinations by Scalo and Kroupa et al., and the variation with stellar mass of the slope of the IMF is compared with reference determinations in the literature. 相似文献

Ten eclipsing binaries, identified in the scope of the CoRoT Space Mission, were selected for analysis. The photometric light curves were processed and analyzed, resulting in the first study of eclipsing binary candidates with their possible photometric solution, in the context of the above-mentioned Space Mission. The selected targets are detached and overcontact systems, for which we computed 2MASS temperatures, in addition to different physical parameters, including orbital period, orbit inclination angle, and temperatures, radius and luminosity ratios. The Cenozoic shelf margin of the Amazon Mouth Basin is characterized by a thick prograding prism of siliciclastic sediments.
This prism, composed mainly of Upper Miocene and younger sediments, overlies a Lower Tertiary carbonate shelf. Two tectonic–sedimentary
models for the area were developed with the aid of new deep-reflection seismic data. Gravitational tectonics dominate the
regional geological framework. Tensional stresses are created near the shelf margin, and compressional features dominate at
the base of the slope. The morphology of this compressional zone is closely associated with the St. Paul Fracture Zone and
the boundary between continental and oceanic crusts.
