Despite threats emanating from the influence of climate and non-climate forcing on the barrier island coastal region of southwestern Nigeria, the extent of the coastal erosion is poorly understood. We report evidence of coastal erosion and sediment accumulation in the region over a 34-year period (1973–2017), using Landsat imagery at intervals of approximately six years. Landsat image corrections and various water-extraction algorithms were used to systematically delineate coastal erosion and accumulation in the area. The region was subdivided into western and eastern subregions separated by Lagos Harbour. In the west, erosion took place during the periods 1973–1979, 1979–1984, 1990–1999 and 2005–2011, whereas in the east, erosion occurred during 1973–1979, 1990–1999 and 1999–2005. Coastal sediment accumulation occurred in the east during 1979–1984, 1984–1990, 2005–2011 and 2011–2017, whereas gains in the west occurred during 1984–1990, 1999–2005 and 2011–2017. The study revealed substantial net erosion of 1 228.1 ha in the region as a whole, over the full period. Sediment accumulation accompanying the coastal erosion appears to be linked to longshore drift. Erosion between 1973 and 2011 was probably attributable to climate change (storms and tidal conditions), longshore drift, the inflow and outflow of water at Lagos Harbour, coastal morphology and, possibly, human impacts. However, the coastal changes between 2011 and 2017 were more obviously associated with human activities, such as development of the Eko Atlantic construction project. Coastal surveillance, together with the use of environmentally sensitive protective measures, could possibly help to reduce coastal erosion in the region. Careful coastal management practices, including artificial nourishing and the installation of resilient structures (e.g. seawalls), should be undertaken to protect human settlements that are already at risk from sea-level rise.  相似文献

Profiles with till and stratified meltwater sediments have been examined. Structural and morphological conditions indicate a deposition of till in the same environment as the stratified sediments. We analyzed the luminosity-temperature-mass of gas (L X ?T?M g ) relations for a sample of 21 Chandra galaxy clusters. We used the standard approach (β?model) to evaluate these relations for our sample that differs from other catalogues since it considers galaxy clusters at higher redshifts (0.4<z<1.4). We assumed power-law relations in the form $L_{X} \sim(1 +z)^{A_{L_{X}T}} T^{\beta_{L_{X}T}}$ , $M_{g} \sim(1 + z)^{A_{M_{g}T}} T^{\beta_{M_{g}T}}$ , and $M_{g} \sim(1 + z)^{A_{M_{g}L_{X}}} L^{\beta_{M_{g}L_{X}}}$ . We obtained the following fitting parameters with 68 % confidence level: $A_{L_{X}T} = 1.50 \pm0.23$ , $\beta_{L_{X}T} = 2.55 \pm0.07$ ; $A_{M_{g}T} = -0.58 \pm0.13$ and $\beta_{M_{g}T} = 1.77 \pm0.16$ ; $A_{M_{g}L_{X}} \approx-1.86 \pm0.34$ and $\beta_{M_{g}L_{X}} = 0.73 \pm0.15$ , respectively. We found that the evolution of the M g ?T relation is small, while the M g ?L X relation is strong for the cosmological parameters Ω m =0.27 and Ω Λ =0.73. In overall, the clusters at high-z have stronger dependencies between L X ?T?M g correlations, than those for clusters at low-z. For most of galaxy clusters (first of all, from MACS and RCS surveys) these results are obtained for the first time.  相似文献

A geometric method based on the high-order 3D Voronoi tessellation is proposed for identifying single galaxies, pairs and triplets. This approach allows us to select small galaxy groups and isolated galaxies in different environments and to find the isolated systems. The volume-limited sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 spectroscopic survey was used. We conclude that in such small groups as pairs and triplets, segregation by luminosity is clearly observed: galaxies in isolated pairs and triplets are on average two times more luminous than isolated galaxies. We consider the dark matter content in different systems. The median values of mass-to-luminosity ratio are  12 M/L  for the isolated pairs and  44 M/L  for the isolated triplets, and 7 (8)  M/L  for the most compact pairs (triplets). We also found that systems in denser environments have greater rms velocity and mass-to-luminosity ratio.  相似文献

The alkalic suite of Jan Mayen is of the trachybasaltic typewith a K2O/Na2O ratio of about 1·64. The suite includesall intermediate types of lavas between ankaramite and trachyte,with ankaramites being particularly prevalent. The major andtrace element trends are well defined. A new method allows distinctionbetween fractionated and accumulative ankaramites, and it isshown that the most primitive ankaramite contains 13–14per cent MgO. Experimentally determined P-T phase relationsof this composition suggest that it might be a primary composition,formed by partial melting of a spinel lherzolitic source at19·5kb and 1415°C. The fractionation from ankaramiteto trachybasalt occurred at low pressure, and was controlledby delayed gravitative settling of phenocrysts, while the fractionationfrom trachybasalt to trachyte is explained by crystallizationon the walls of the magma chambers.  相似文献

S.Ya. Braude (1911–2003) was the well‐known radio astronomer, one of the founders of low‐frequency astronomical research in the world, in particular in the former Soviet Union. He began to work in this field of science in 1957, in Kharkiv city (Ukraine), from the design and manufacturing small decameter interferometer ID‐1 and ID‐2. Since that time Braude and his team have developed more sophisticated radio decameter telescopes as UTR‐1 and UTR‐2 (the largest in the world till now) as well as the first decameter VLBI network URAN. They have obtained some important pioneering results about low‐frequency radio emission of objects in our Solar system, Galaxy and Metagalaxy by means of these telescopes. In this paper the key events of early history of decameter radio astronomy research in the former USSR are mentioned with emphasizing the role of S. Braude. For the period of 1957–1962, the quotations of Braude's Personal Diary (2003) are first laying open to the public. The most important results obtained by S.Ya. We present a very detailed analysis of Chandra and XMMNewton observations of XLSSJ022403.9-041328 galaxy cluster of z=1, which was detected during the XMM-Newton Large Scale Structure survey. To define the “luminosity-temperature-mass”, L X T X M, scaling relations we built temperature, surface brightness, density, and mass profiles. The total gravitational mass of this cluster was taken within the scaled radius, R 500, was determined under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium for intercluster gas and spherical symmetry of a cluster. The temperature of XLSSJ022403.9-041328 was found to be 4.5±0.7 keV from the Chandra data, and 3.8±0.3 from the XMMNewton data. The total gravitational mass is equal to 1.44±0.23×1014 M at the corresponding radius, while the fraction of gas is equal to 15 % of a total mass. These values were used to define the XLSSJ022403.9-041328 galaxy cluster at the L X T X M g scaling relations, and for all of these cases we got agreement which fitting well with self-similar model. This research permits us to use L X T X M relations for galaxy clusters at a highest redshift in the cosmological probes.  相似文献
