Aspects of the reproductive biology of the brown mussel Perna perna at the Iture rocky beach near Cape Coast, Ghana, were studied from September 2014 to August 2015. The current study was aimed at providing information useful for managing the mussel fishery in this locality and also that would form the basis for designing appropriate culture methods for the species. Microscopic examination of fresh smears of gonadal material, as well as histological preparations of the gonad, were used to study the sexuality and breeding pattern of the species. Monthly gonadal and condition indices were also determined. Perna perna exhibited gonochoristic sexuality with a sex ratio of approximately 1:1 throughout the study period. Sexes were identifiable at shell lengths of 15.0–19.9 mm. Five stages of gonadal development were identified in both sexes. Gametogenic activity was continuous throughout the year, with two major spawning activities, from April to June and from August to December. These periods coincided with the major and minor rainy seasons, respectively, as well as the major upwelling period in August. Condition indices suggest that the mussels were in better condition for harvesting in March and August prior to the major spawning events. 相似文献

We have investigated the interacting winds model (IWM) in which the shapes of elliptical Planetary Nebulae (PNe) can be explained
by the asymmetric mass loss produced by a rotating AGB star. The mass loss mechanism is based on a dust driven wind calculated
for stationary situations. Already for small rotation rates of the AGB star we get a significantly angle-dependent mass loss
which is concentrated towards the equatorial plane. This pole to equator density variation in the space surrounding the star
influences the shape of the later developed PN. We compare these theoretical shapes with observed PNe and for some objects
with well known quantities our model can fit the observations quite well.

Repeated SN-explosion provide large amounts of thermal energy as well as energetic particles through a 1. order Fermi-process. Both effects together with the generation of Alfvén-waves are considered to drive a large scale outflow from a galaxy. These so-called galactic windstransport stellar material enriched by heavy elements into the intergalactic space explaining also the large amount of metals found inthe intergalactic gas. The present contribution is focused on time-dependenteffects which originate from galactic winds driven by a star burst activity. Shock waves travelling through the galactic wind and radiative cooling within the expanding plasma lead to complex flow structures. Depending e.g. on theSFR of the galaxy galactic winds can remove almost all ISM into the galactic halo and therefore cease a subsequent star formation. 相似文献

Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are the most likely sources of the galactic cosmic rays up to energies of about 1015 eV/nuc. The large scale shock waves of SNRs are almost ideal sites to accelerate particles up to these highly non-thermal
energies by a first order Fermi mechanism which operates through scattering of the particles at magnetic irregularities. In
order to get an estimate on the total amount of the explosion energy E
SNconverted into high energy particles the evolution of a SNR has to be followed up to the final merging with the interstellar
medium. This can only be done by numerical simulations since the non-linear modifications of the shock wave due to particle
acceleration as well as radiative cooling processes at later SNR stages have to be considered in such investigations. Based
on a large sample of numerical evolution calculations performed for different ambient densities n
ext, SN explosion energies, magnetic fields etc. we discuss the final ‘yields’ of cosmic rays at the final SNR stage where the
Mach number of the shock waves drops below 2. At these times the cosmic rays start to diffuse out of the remnant. In the range
of external densities of10-2 ≤ n
ext/[cm-3] ≤ 30 we find a the total acceleration efficiency of about 0.15 E
SN with an increase up to 0.24 E
SN at maximum for an external density of n
ext = 10 cm-3. Since for the larger ambient densities radiative cooling can reduce significantly the total thermal energy content of the
remnant dissipation of Alfvén waves can provide an important heating mechanism for the gas at these later stages. From the
collisions of the cosmic rays with the thermal plasma neutral pions are generated which decay subsequently into observable
γ-rays above 100 MeV. Hence, we calculate these γ-ray luminosities of SNRs and compare them with current upper limits of ground
based γ-raytelescopes. The development of dense shells due to cooling of the thermal plasma increases the γ-ray luminosities
and e.g. an external density of n
ext = 10 cm-3 with E
SN = 1051 erg can lead to a γ-ray flux above 10-6 ph cm-2 s-1 for a remnant located at a distance of 1 kpc.

Ecosystem-based management of marine fisheries requires the use of simulation modelling to investigate the system-level impact of candidate fisheries management strategies. However, testing of fundamental assumptions such as system structure or process formulations is rarely done. In this study, we compare the output of three different ecosystem models (Atlantis, Ecopath with Ecosim, and OSMOSE) applied to the same ecosystem (the southern Benguela), to explore which ecosystem effects of fishing are most sensitive to model uncertainty. We subjected the models to two contrasting fishing pressure scenarios, applying high fishing pressure to either small pelagic fish or to adult hake. We compared the resulting model behaviour at a system level, and also at the level of model groups. We analysed the outputs in terms of various commonly used ecosystem indicators, and found some similarities in the overall behaviour of the models, despite major differences in model formulation and assumptions. Direction of change in system-level indicators was consistent for all models under the hake pressure scenario, although discrepancies emerged under the small-pelagic-fish scenario. Studying biomass response of individual model groups was key to understanding more integrated system-level metrics. All three models are based on existing knowledge of the system, and the convergence of model results increases confidence in the robustness of the model outputs. Points of divergence in the model results suggest important areas of future study. The use of feeding guilds to provide indicators for fish species at an aggregated level was explored, and proved to be an interesting alternative to aggregation by trophic level. 相似文献
